What is a "first look"? A first look is when the couple chooses to see each other before the ceremony. It is a moment that they take to themselves to see each other for the first time on their wedding day.
Some people believe that if you see each other before the wedding you will be doomed to a divorce. I personally think that is just an old wive's tale. The choice of a first look should be based on your needs, your style, & your preferred timeline.
The positive side of a first look is you can create a timeline that allows you be with your guests more. This is better for the party couple or the couple who want to spend as much time with their loved ones as possible.
By having a first look before the ceremony, the whole point really, is so that you can have all of the photography done before the ceremony. This means after the ceremony you can go straight to cocktail hour. Some couples want to go cruise in a limo or get pictures in a unique location. The choice is yours. But, because you chose photography before the ceremony your options are wide open.
The negatives to a first look are also something to take into consideration. You will have to be ready much earlier in the day. You will need more coverage into the reception from your photographer/videographer. Also, you will need to gather your families for formals before the ceremony. This means getting everyone to the church before the ceremony & getting them there on time. Sometime with large families it can be difficult to get everyone to the church hours before the ceremony. Especially if they have small children.
This is just a short list of how a first look can effect your day. It really comes down to your personalities, families, & your beliefs.
